The Oglala Sioux Tribe, based on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, holds federally recognized sovereign status that legally permits the issuance of tribal currency. Whether these pieces saw any meaningful circulation within Pine Ridge — one of the most economically distressed communities in the United States — or were produced primarily for the collector market is a question the mintage figures alone cannot answer.
