Seychelles decimalised its currency in 1976 upon declaring a republic, breaking from the colonial rupee system. This series ran through the early post-independence decades as the country built its tourism-dependent economy largely from scratch, and the coins circulated hard in that environment — small-denomination copper-nickel pieces from this period are routinely found heavily worn.
