Reverse description A small American eagle with wings displayed and elevated stands perched atop a rocky mound or globe at center, head turned to the right, in an alert posture reminiscent of early heraldic American coinage design. The circumferential legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA runs along the periphery, flanked by a border of small dots or stars. The field is plain and unadorned, allowing the naturalistic eagle motif to dominate the composition in the early Federal style.
