Andorra had no domestic coinage of its own until 1982, having relied for centuries on a dual-currency arrangement rooted in the 1278 Pareatge — the treaty that split sovereignty over the territory between the French Crown and the Spanish Bishop of Urgell. These small-denomination issues from the mid-2000s were struck primarily for collectors; Andorra adopted the euro as its de facto currency well before the formal monetary agreement with the EU was finalized in 2011.
