Villargordo is a small municipality in Jaén province, Andalusia. This 25 céntimos note was issued during the Spanish Civil War period, when hundreds of Spanish towns — cut off from official coin supply by hoarding and wartime disruption — printed their own emergency fractional paper, collectively known as billetes locales or vales. The Consejo Municipal (municipal council, the Republican administrative body replacing the traditional ayuntamiento in many localities after July 1936) issued these purely out of necessity, not monetary ambition.
The Gari Montalvo catalogue remains the primary reference for these hyper-local emissions, and the B suffix on this listing typically denotes a variant — possibly a paper weight, color, or serial numbering difference from an earlier type. Most of these tiny Jaén-province issues had extremely short circulation lives and were redeemed or simply discarded once central Republican currency restocked local economies.
