Villanueva la Roja is a small municipality in the province of Salamanca, and like hundreds of similar localities across Republican Spain, its ayuntamiento resorted to printing its own fractional emergency notes when the Civil War destroyed the supply of small change after 1936. The Banco de España had effectively ceased distributing centavo coins, and municipal governments filled the vacuum with whatever printing resources were locally available — often a rubber stamp, a local press, or hand-cut card.
Twenty-five céntimos was among the most common fractional values issued in this series of wartime municipal scrip. Whether this specific note was typeset, lithographed, or hand-stamped is the detail that separates catalog curiosity from genuine scarcity.
