Villanueva de Córdoba is a small municipality in the Sierra Morena foothills of northern Córdoba province. This 25 céntimos note is an emergency local issue from the Spanish Civil War period, when Republican-held municipalities across Andalucía and elsewhere were forced to produce their own fractional currency after the nationalist uprising disrupted coin and small-denomination note circulation from mid-1936 onward. Hundreds of Spanish towns issued similar emergency scrip — the Gari Monedes catalog documents thousands of variants — but survival rates for these hyperlocal issues vary enormously.
The official stamp was the primary authentication device, as printing infrastructure in small municipalities was limited to whatever was locally available.
