Villacarrillo is a small olive-producing municipality in Jaén province, Andalusia. Like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, its municipal council issued fractional paper currency in 1936–37 to compensate for the near-total disappearance of metallic coinage — hoarded, melted, or simply disrupted by collapsing supply chains. These local emergency issues were authorized under Republican government directives that acknowledged the coin shortage without being able to solve it centrally.
Municipal issues from rural Jaén towns are among the more elusive of the Spanish Civil War locales. Villacarrillo's output was small, intended for strictly local use, and few pieces survived the war's end.
