Viladrau is a small mountain municipality in the Montseny massif, and like hundreds of Catalan and Spanish towns during the Civil War, it was forced to issue its own fractional currency after the Republican government's hoarding decrees of 1936 stripped everyday silver and copper from circulation entirely. The Consell Municipal — by then operating under anarchist and leftist coalition control across much of Catalonia — authorized these emergency notes to keep local commerce moving.
Imprenta El Secretariat Català handled a significant volume of these municipal emergency issues out of Barcelona, which accounts for the consistency in production quality across many small-town Catalan notes of this period despite their wildly varying designs.
