Issued by the municipality of Vielha in the Val d'Aran during the Spanish Civil War, when the Republican zone faced an acute shortage of small change after silver and copper coinage disappeared from circulation almost overnight. Hundreds of Spanish municipalities, cooperatives, and regional governments improvised their own emergency issues between 1936 and 1938 — cardboard among the most perishable of the materials pressed into service.
Survival rates for Aranese issues are notably low. The Val d'Aran's geographic isolation in the Pyrenees meant small print runs and purely local circulation.
