Valdepeñas, a wine-producing town in Ciudad Real province, was among hundreds of Spanish municipalities forced to print their own fractional currency during the Civil War after Republican-zone metallic coinage essentially vanished from circulation by late 1936. These locally issued pieces — known generically as "billetes locales" or "moneda fiduciaria local" — were an ad hoc response to a real transactional crisis, not a political gesture.
The Litografía Félix Martínez was a local commercial press, not a specialist security printer. That origin shows in survivorship: the paper is thin and the lithographic work basic, meaning worn or damaged examples are the norm rather than the exception.
