Torredonjimeno is a small olive-growing municipality in Jaén province, Andalusia. This note is one of thousands of locally issued emergency fractional pieces — known collectively as "billetes de necesidad" — that flooded Republican-held Spain after July 1936, when the military uprising triggered an immediate hoarding of metallic coin and left municipalities scrambling to fill the gap with whatever they could print or stamp locally.
At 50 × 35 mm, the physical object is closer to a visiting card than a banknote. The Consejo Municipal — the Republican municipal council — had no printing infrastructure, which is why these local issues vary so wildly in quality and material across the province.
