Torrebesses is a village in the Segrià comarca of Lleida with a population that barely exceeded 400 during the 1930s. Like hundreds of Catalan municipalities during the Spanish Civil War, the local council issued its own fractional emergency currency after the collapse of small-denomination coinage circulation in 1936 — the Republican government's inability to supply adequate change drove even the smallest towns to print their own.
The official stamp was the primary fraud deterrent, applied by hand after printing. On notes from villages this small, ink coverage and stamp impression vary considerably between surviving examples.
