Sardañola and Ripollet are neighboring municipalities in the Vallès Occidental comarca, and during the early months of the Spanish Civil War their collectivized industries and agricultural cooperatives federated under a single local authority. The resulting shortage of small change — a near-universal problem across Republican-controlled Catalonia — forced dozens of such federations to print their own fractional notes, which circulated as de facto currency within tightly bounded local economies.
Joan Sabadell, the Barcelona printer, produced multiple similar emergency issues for Catalan collectivities during this period. The federation dissolved as Nationalist forces advanced, and surviving notes from this issue are scarce.
