Roquetas de Mar was one of hundreds of Spanish municipalities forced to issue emergency fractional paper money during the Civil War after metallic coin — hoarded, melted, or simply absent — ceased to circulate reliably. These local billetes de necesidad were produced under wartime conditions with minimal printing resources, which is why typographic simplicity and hand-stamped validations are the rule rather than the exception across the series.
The Gari Mon catalogue remains the primary reference for these Republican-zone municipal emissions, and the 1270-A designation places this squarely within the documented Roquetas output — a small coastal Almería council issuing scrip that would have been worthless outside its own market.
