Puebla de Don Fadrique is a small municipality in Granada province, and like hundreds of Spanish towns it resorted to locally printed fractional paper during the Civil War after coin shortages made small transactions nearly impossible. These ayuntamiento-issued pieces — technically cartones or billetes de necesidad — were stopgap instruments, authorized at the municipal level under the Republican zone's general tolerance for emergency local currency from 1936 onward.
The Gari Monerris catalog remains the primary reference for these Spanish Civil War municipal issues, and low reference numbers within a local series often indicate the piece is among the first documented types from that issuer.
