Polán is a small municipality in the province of Toledo, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, its local council issued emergency fractional scrip when coins vanished from circulation almost overnight in the summer of 1936. The Republican government's decree authorizing local bodies to produce their own change-money opened the door to an enormous variety of these issues — quality, design, and reliability varying wildly from one town to the next.
The Gari Montllor catalog remains the primary reference for this material, and low catalog numbers within a municipality's sequence typically indicate the earliest issue type. Polán's scrip is not frequently encountered outside Spanish regional collections.
