Pauls is a tiny village in the Terra Alta comarca of Tarragona, and like hundreds of other Catalan and Aragonese municipalities during the Civil War, it printed its own emergency fractional currency when Republican Spain's small change dried up almost entirely by mid-1937. The Generalitat de Catalunya had authorized local issues precisely because the coin shortage had become acute enough to paralyze everyday commerce — markets, bakeries, cooperatives could not make change.
Turró catalogues well over two thousand such municipal issues; most were printed on whatever stock was available locally, often by a village printer or rubber stamp, and few circulated beyond the issuing municipality's immediate trading circle. Pauls had a wartime population of only a few hundred.
