Pau is a small municipality in the Alt Empordà comarca of Catalonia, and like hundreds of Catalan and Spanish Republican councils during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency in 1937 when small-denomination coinage effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply lost in the chaos of wartime supply collapse. These municipal notes, collectively documented in Turró's catalog, were legal only within the issuing municipality's boundaries.
The series from Pau is among the more obscure in the Alt Empordà grouping. Very few examples survive in any condition, largely because the notes' validity ended abruptly with Franco's consolidation of Catalonia in early 1939, after which most were discarded or destroyed.
