Olvena is a village in the Huesca province of Aragon that, at the time of the Civil War, had a population numbering in the hundreds. Like hundreds of other Spanish municipalities during 1936–1937, the local council issued its own fractional emergency notes — moneda local or "guerra civil" issues — to compensate for the near-total disappearance of metallic coinage from circulation. The Republican government's inability to supply small change to rural communities made these hyper-local scrip issues a practical necessity rather than an act of monetary ambition.
The Gari catalogue remains the primary reference for these Aragonese municipal issues. Olvena's output was almost certainly tiny, produced on whatever printing or duplicating equipment the council had at hand.
