Olesa de Montserrat, a small textile town in the Baix Llobregat comarca, issued emergency fractional currency during the Spanish Civil War when the Republican zone suffered a near-total collapse of small-denomination coinage. The state had requisitioned metal for the war effort, and municipalities across Catalonia were left to print their own solutions. Hundreds of towns did exactly that — the result was a chaotic patchwork of locally valid scrip, most of it redeemable only within the issuing municipality's own commerce.

The Tipografia C.A.M. in Barcelona handled production for multiple Catalan municipal issues during this period, which gives this note a certain standardized quality despite its intensely local character. Turró's catalog documents well over a thousand such emissions; this one falls at #1682.
