Motril, a coastal town in Granada province, was a Republican stronghold during the Civil War, and its local committees issued emergency fractional currency — known broadly as "billetes locales" — to address the chronic shortage of small change that plagued the Republican zone from 1936 onward. The U.H.P. (Unión de Hermanos Proletarios) was a slogan-turned-organizational banner born from the October 1934 Asturian uprising, later adopted by various anarcho-syndicalist and socialist local bodies.
Motril's issues are among the less-documented Andalusian emergency pieces. The Gari Montserrat catalogue remains the primary reference for these Spanish Civil War local emissions, and variants within a single municipality can differ significantly in text, color, or endorsement stamps.
