Moncortès de Pallars is a tiny municipality in the Catalan Pyrenees — population measured in the hundreds even today. During the Spanish Civil War, the collapse of small-denomination metallic coinage across the Republican zone forced thousands of local authorities, including the most obscure village councils, to print their own emergency paper currency under a 1937 decree that formally authorized such issues. This note is one of those hyperlocal solutions: a municipal council issuing its own fractional currency because there was simply nothing else to hand.
Turró catalogues hundreds of these Catalan municipal issues, and Moncortès ranks among the smaller emitters. Surviving quantities are typically low for villages of this scale — production runs were short, redemption was chaotic, and most notes were destroyed or lost when the Republican administration collapsed in early 1939.
