Mogente (Valencia) was one of hundreds of Spanish municipalities forced to print its own fractional currency during the Civil War after Republican authorities failed to maintain adequate supplies of small change. The Consejo Municipal issues of 1937 were stopgap measures, typically produced on whatever paper stock was locally available, often by a commercial printer with no banknote experience.
At 63 × 34 mm, the physical object is closer to a postage stamp than a circulating note. Survival rates for these Valencian municipal pieces are highly uneven — some were redeemed and pulped, others simply lost.
