Mas de Barberans is a small municipality in the Terra Alta comarca of Tarragona, and like hundreds of Catalan and Valencian towns during the Civil War, its local council issued fractional currency in 1937 to address the near-total disappearance of small-denomination coins from circulation. The Republican government's Generalitat de Catalunya had authorized municipal bodies to fill this gap, which produced an extraordinary proliferation of locally printed emergency notes — Turró catalogs over 1,500 distinct issues from this period alone.

At 63 × 37 mm on card stock, this is about as small as Spanish Civil War municipal paper gets.
