La Almolda is a small municipality in Zaragoza province, and like hundreds of similar towns across Republican-held Spain, its municipal council issued fractional emergency notes during 1936–1937 when the withdrawal and hoarding of metallic coinage created an acute shortage of small change. These local emissions — collectively termed "billetes de necesidad" — were produced with whatever materials were at hand, typically on plain paper with a rubber stamp as the sole authentication.
