L'Ametlla de Mar is a small fishing town on the Costa Daurada in southern Catalonia, and like hundreds of other Catalan municipalities during the Civil War, it issued its own fractional emergency currency in 1937 after coinage effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply unavailable in the chaos following July 1936. The Consell Municipal handled local economic life directly, and these tiny notes were the practical result.
Imprenta Solé in Tarragona handled production for several of these municipal issues, which accounts for a certain family resemblance across notes from the region. At 43 × 32 mm, this is among the smallest paper currency produced anywhere in the Republican zone.
