Jaén was one of hundreds of Spanish municipalities that issued emergency small-change notes during the Civil War after fractional coinage all but vanished from circulation in 1936. The Republican zone saw chronic shortages of coins almost immediately, and local councils, trade unions, and even individual businesses stepped in to fill the gap — with wildly uneven results in terms of print quality and redemption reliability.
The Gari Mon reference places this firmly in the documented municipal series, though surviving examples of the smaller Jaén fractionals are considerably harder to find than the province's one-peseta issues.
