During the Spanish Civil War, dozens of Catalan industrial enterprises and worker collectives issued their own emergency fractional currency when the Republican economy fragmented and small-denomination coinage effectively vanished from circulation. The Hispano Igualadina was a tram and bus company operating in and around Igualada, in the Anoia comarca west of Barcelona. Its workers' union — the Unió de Treballadors — took control of the firm after the July 1936 collectivization wave and issued these notes to cover wages and local transactions.
The AL catalogue reference places this firmly within the vast Altès documentation of Catalan civil war emergency issues, a category that numbers in the thousands of distinct pieces across a three-year span.
