Horta de Terra Alta — properly Horta de Sant Joan — issued this tiny emergency piece during the Spanish Civil War under the Republican currency fragmentation that followed the 1936 peseta crisis. The central government's inability to maintain small coin circulation forced thousands of Catalan and Aragonese municipalities to print their own fractional paper, a phenomenon the Generalitat repeatedly tried and failed to suppress.
At 35 × 30 mm, this is among the smallest pieces in the entire municipal series. The card stock construction was a practical response to the near-impossibility of sourcing proper banknote paper in a war zone — local printers used whatever was at hand.
