Hornos de Segura is a small mountain municipality in the Sierra de Segura, Jaén province, and this note is a product of the Spanish Civil War's chaotic monetary fragmentation. When the Republican zone's small-change supply collapsed in 1936–37, hundreds of municipalities printed their own emergency fractional currency — papel moneda local — under varying degrees of official sanction. Hornos, with a wartime population unlikely to have exceeded a few hundred, was among the smallest communities to do so.
The Gari Monerris catalogue reference places this within the documented Jaén provincial issues, printed by José Martínez in Linares, a press that handled several such commissions from surrounding towns. The official stamp serves as the note's only authentication mechanism.
