Herencia is a small municipality in the province of Ciudad Real, Castilla-La Mancha, and this 25 céntimos note is one of dozens of emergency paper issues produced by Spanish town councils during the Civil War after coinage effectively vanished from circulation. The Republican government's decree of August 1937 authorized local bodies to issue small-denomination fractional currency, and Herencia complied — though many of these municipal issues were printed on whatever stock was locally available, with predictably uneven results.
The Gari Monovar census documents this as type A, implying at least one variant exists within the series.
