Fortanete is a small municipality in the Maestrazgo comarca of Teruel, Aragon — one of hundreds of Spanish towns that printed emergency fractional paper during the Civil War after metallic coin disappeared from circulation almost entirely by mid-1936. The Consejo Municipal issues of this period were not coordinated by any central authority; each town designed and printed its own notes, usually on whatever paper was locally available, often with rubber stamps or hand signatures providing the only security element.
The Gari Montenegro catalogue remains the primary reference for these Aragonese municipals, and many assigned numbers represent single known examples.
