Fonts de Sacalm — a small spa town in the Girona comarca known mainly for its mineral water bottling — issued this note during the anarchist and republican municipal administrations that took over local governance across Catalonia following the July 1936 uprising. Hundreds of Catalan municipalities printed their own fractional currency that year and the next, driven by a genuine coin shortage as silver and copper were hoarded or melted.

Imprenta Litografia Sabadell y Cia. handled a substantial volume of these wartime municipal emissions out of Barcelona, which accounts for the relative consistency in print quality across many small-town Catalan issues of this period despite their chaotic political origins.
