Fiñana is a small municipality in Almería province, and like hundreds of Spanish towns it issued its own emergency paper money during the Civil War after the Republican government authorized local currency in 1936 to address the catastrophic shortage of small change caused by coin hoarding. These tiny municipal notes — often little more than stamped slips — circulated purely out of necessity within their issuing locality and were theoretically redeemable once normal monetary order was restored, which for many Republican-held towns never came.
The Gari catalog remains the primary reference for this chaotic body of material, and many Almería provincial issues survive in surprisingly small numbers given how recently they circulated.
