Falset is a small town in the Priorat region of Catalonia, and like hundreds of other Spanish municipalities it resorted to issuing its own fractional emergency currency during the Civil War after the Republican government's coin shortage left local commerce effectively paralyzed. These tiny municipal issues — called *moneda local* or more informally *vales* — were produced under wildly varying conditions, often on whatever card or paper stock was at hand, with an official rubber stamp serving as the only anti-counterfeiting measure.

The Turró catalogue remains the essential reference for these Catalan issues, and 977 places this among the better-documented Falset pieces.
