Escañuela is a small municipality in the province of Jaén, Andalusia, and like hundreds of similarly sized Spanish towns, its municipal council was forced to produce its own fractional emergency currency during the Civil War after the withdrawal and hoarding of metallic coinage created a near-total breakdown in everyday transactions. The Consejo Municipal issues of this period were typically produced locally — often on whatever paper stock was available — with little standardization in printing quality or design execution.

The Gari Monovar catalog remains the primary reference for these Spanish Civil War local emissions, though documentation on many small Jaén-province pieces is incomplete.
