Laboratoris del Nord d'Espanya was a pharmaceutical manufacturer based in El Masnou, a coastal town north of Barcelona. Like hundreds of Catalan businesses, cooperatives, and municipal bodies, L.N.E. issued its own emergency fractional currency in 1937 when the Republican government's coin supply collapsed under wartime hoarding and metal shortages. These privately issued paper fractions — collectively catalogued under the *Arxiu Local* (AL) system — are among the most idiosyncratic products of the Spanish Civil War period.
A pharmaceutical company printing its own money is not an anomaly for 1937 Catalonia. It is the rule.
