Cortes de Arenoso is a small municipality in the Gúdar-Javalambre comarca of Teruel, Aragon. This 25 céntimos note is an emergency local issue from the Spanish Civil War period, when the breakdown of the Republican monetary supply chain forced hundreds of small towns to print their own fractional currency. The Generalitat de Catalunya and the Republican government formally sanctioned this practice in 1936, but standardization was never achieved — each municipality improvised format, material, and denomination independently.
The thick card stock was a practical choice where proper banknote paper was simply unavailable.
