Castuera is a small municipality in Badajoz province, Extremadura — one of hundreds of Republican-held towns that issued emergency fractional paper during the Spanish Civil War after metallic coin disappeared almost entirely from circulation by 1936–37. The Consejo Municipal issued these locally rather than waiting for central Republican authorities, which were themselves struggling to maintain any coherent monetary policy across contested territory.
Provincial emergency issues like this one were printed in tiny runs, often on whatever paper stock was locally available, and rarely survived the war in quantity. Gari's cataloguing of these municipales remains the essential reference for the type.
