Castellar's municipal council issued emergency fractional currency during the Spanish Civil War, when Republican Spain suffered an acute shortage of small change — hoarding, melting, and supply disruption had effectively stripped coins from everyday commerce. Hundreds of municipalities across Catalonia and the rest of Republican territory responded by printing their own provisional notes, authorized under a 1936 decree that briefly legitimized this chaotic patchwork of local issues.
The Gari Mon#475-A reference places this within the Gari catalog of Spanish municipal emergency notes — a system meticulously assembled precisely because official records are fragmentary. Total print runs for most Castellar issues were tiny, circulation was strictly local, and survival rates reflect that.
