Cardedeu is a small town in the Vallès Oriental comarca, northeast of Barcelona, and like hundreds of Catalan municipalities during the Civil War it issued its own emergency paper fractional currency after the gold and silver coinage essentially vanished from circulation in 1936. The Republican government's inability to supply small-denomination coins created a vacuum that local councils, trade unions, and even individual businesses filled with their own printed pieces — a phenomenon unique in scale to the Spanish conflict.
Gràfiques Unificades in Granollers was a collectivized print shop operating under anarcho-syndicalist management during this period, which accounts for a notable consistency in production quality across several Vallès Oriental municipal issues it handled.
