Capçanes is a small wine-producing village in the Priorat comarca of Tarragona, and like hundreds of Catalan municipalities during the Civil War, it issued its own fractional paper currency when the Republic's coinage supply collapsed in 1936–37. These local emergency notes — known collectively as paper moneda municipal — were authorized under the Generalitat de Catalunya's decree of August 1936, which permitted town councils to print low-denomination scrip to keep daily commerce moving.

Imprenta Solé handled a significant volume of these municipal commissions out of Tarragona. Print runs for village-level issues were typically tiny, and post-war peseta reintegration rendered them worthless overnight.
