Canjáyar is a small municipality in the Alpujarra Almeriense, and this 25 céntimos piece is one of hundreds of hyperlocal emergency notes — locally called billetes de necesidad — issued by Republican-controlled towns during the Spanish Civil War after the collapse of small-denomination coinage circulation in 1936. The Comité de Abastos, a supply committee rather than a financial institution, had no business issuing currency, but necessity overrode formality throughout the Republican zone.
Gari Mon 438-A suggests at least one variant exists in the cataloged series for this issuer. Notes from Alpujarran villages survive in very small numbers; most were redeemed locally or simply discarded once the war ended the committees that backed them.
