Calella's 25 céntimos emergency note belongs to the vast network of locally issued paper money that flooded Catalonia and the rest of the Republican zone from 1936 onward, after hoarding and the wartime drain on metallic currency left ordinary commerce effectively without small change. The Generalitat de Catalunya formally authorized municipalities to issue their own paper fractional currency, which is why hundreds of towns — Calella among them — produced notes that were legally valid only within their own boundaries.

Printed by a local press just streets from the issuing authority, Turró#603 is firmly in the lower-value tier of the series, where survival rates tend to be poor precisely because the notes circulated hardest and were worth least to save.
