One of hundreds of small-denomination emergency notes issued by Catalan municipalities during the Spanish Civil War, when the Republic's central monetary system had effectively collapsed and local governments scrambled to fill the coin shortage caused by hoarding and wartime disruption. The Ajuntament de Caldes de Montbui — a spa town north of Barcelona known since Roman times for its thermal springs — issued this 25 céntimos piece as functional small change, not as a financial instrument of any sophistication.
Turró catalogs these Catalan municipal issues exhaustively; #599 places this note within a dense cluster of 1937 Barcelona-province emissions, most printed on whatever stock was locally available.
