One of hundreds of small-denomination emergency notes — "vales" or "moneda local" — issued by Catalan municipalities during the Civil War, when the Republican government could not supply sufficient small change and local authorities were left to improvise. Breda, a small town in the Selva comarca of Girona, contracted Tipografia A. Benages in Barcelona to produce this cardboard substitute. The printer handled a significant volume of similar commissions from other Ayuntamientos throughout 1937.

Turró's catalog documents these Civil War municipals exhaustively; #535 places this note within a well-mapped but genuinely scarce series. Breda's small population meant limited production runs.
