Bétera is a small municipality northwest of Valencia, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, its municipal council issued emergency fractional currency in 1937 when Republican-zone coinage all but vanished from circulation. These local emergency notes — known collectively as billetes de necesidad — were produced under wildly varying conditions, often on whatever stock was available, with an official stamp doing most of the authentication work in lieu of any sophisticated security printing.
The Turró and Gari catalogues between them document thousands of such emissions; the fact that this note carries separate references in both suggests it has been independently verified by specialists in Valencian provincial issues.
