Benifato is a village in the Comtat de Guadalest, inland Alicante province, with a population that barely reached a few hundred during the Republic. That a municipal council this small was authorizing its own fractional currency in 1937 reflects the near-total collapse of small-denomination coinage circulation on the Republican home front — the brass and copper had been hoarded, melted, or simply vanished. Councils across Valencia and Alicante filled the gap with locally stamped paper, most of it crudely produced and redeemable only within the issuing municipality.

The Gari Montsant cataloguing places this among the rarer village-level emissions from the region. Survival rates for notes from settlements this small are low — short redemption windows, no banking infrastructure, and wartime destruction account for most losses.
