Obverse description The obverse is printed on cream-coloured cardboard and features a double concentric dotted border in green ink encircling the entire field. The circular legend, reading AYUNTAMIENTO DE BELMONTE (CUENCA) at top and MONEDA LOCAL at bottom, is printed in green. In the centre, the denomination 25 centimos is rendered in large green numerals and text, overlaid by a purple ink official municipal stamp depicting a heraldic castle flanked by towers, serving as a validation mark. A unique black serial number, No 07504, followed by an asterisk, is printed in bold typeface across the lower centre of the field.

Additional information

Belmonte's cardboard emergency coinage was issued during the Spanish Civil War, when the Republican government's inability to maintain adequate supplies of small change forced hundreds of municipalities to produce their own local scrip. Cuenca province saw particularly fragmented issuance, with individual towns printing obligations that were worthless beyond their own market squares. The 60mm format made these nearly impossible to mistake for anything official — which was partly the point.
